Wilfred J. Savord

HERMANSVILLE — Wilfred J. Savord, 93, of Hermansville, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 23, 2024, after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was born in Faithorn, on Aug. 30, 1931, son of William J. and Marcella (Gibour) Savord.

Wilfred married Helen Marie McCoy in Crown Point, Ind. on May 28, 1966.

As a boy, he worked in the woods until he was 15 and then moved to Chicago. While in Chicago, he worked for the American Can Company for two years. He then transitioned to working for the CSX Railroad, previously the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad. He worked as a conductor-switchman for 39 years until retiring to Hermansville in 1989.

As an avid outdoorsman, Wilfred enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, trimming the trees, snow blowing and riding his lawnmower all over his property. He also loved to cook and was a jokester. There was nothing he loved more than dancing, especially with Helen. He was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles and St. John Neumann Church. Wilfred was very active in the church. He was Helen’s right-hand man in St. Anne’s Society Corporal and attending mass was incredibly important to him.

Among his survivors include Helen, his wife of 58 years; children, Karen Miller of Hermansville, Victoria Berner of Wonder Lake, Ill., Sue Zini of Hermansville, Deborah Crummie of Copperas Cove, Texas, and Mary Lou (Milton) Hudson of Vulcan; 14 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Edna (Alan) Pickl of Stephenson; and many loved nieces, nephews and cousins.

Savord; siblings, Anna Mae (George) Zahn, Jeanette (John) Skuja, Father William “Bill” R. Savord, Lucas Savord, Rose Anne (Robert) Nelson; and sons in-laws, Kenneth Berner and Darrell Crummie.
