NORWAY — Elizabeth “Betty” Ann Benzie, 85, of Norway, passed away peacefully in the comfort of her home surrounded by her family on Friday, June 30, 2023.
She was born on July 2, 1937 in Norway, the daughter of the late Herman and Josephine (Girardi) Menghini.
Betty graduated from Norway High School in 1955.
She married Donald Benzie on Aug. 30, 1958 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway and enjoyed 64 years of marriage.
When Don started his teaching and coaching career, they moved to Channing and lived there for 31 years. They moved back to Norway in 1993 to the home she grew up in.
While in Channing, Betty was very active in St. Rose Church, where she was on the Parish Council, Altar Society and was a Eucharistic Minister.
Betty was also active in the community as a volunteer for the startup of the Channing Athletic Complex.
She was the Sagola Township Clerk for 12 years, where she was very instrumental in implementing the Sagola Township Sewer Project.
Betty enjoyed cooking for her family and friends, family get-togethers and particularly lit up when spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She enjoyed golf, bowling, cross-country skiing, gardening, crafting, quilting and sewing. She was an excellent cook and an immaculate housekeeper.
Betty will be deeply missed by her husband Donald; three children, son, John (Julie) Benzie of Iron Mountain; daughters, Debbie (John) Gallino of Vulcan and Terri (Ray) Hagglund of Crystal Falls; grandchildren, Catherine (Paul) St. Louis, Carlee (Joe Delavergne) Benzie, Roy (Maggie Zeh) Hagglund, Kevin Hagglund, Jeff (Ellary) Gallino and Katie (Mike) Buchan; great-grandchildren, AJ and Ashton Gallino, Aisling and Aiden Buchan; brother Bob (Jane) Menghini; sisters-in-law, Julie Larsen and Judy McCarthy; nieces, Michelle (Louis) Menghini-Davis, Becci (Heather) Menghini, Tina McCarthy, Stacey (Rene’) Herteux; and nephew, Scott (Joy) Menghini.
Betty was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Rose Praiss; brother, Dave Menghini and brother-in-law, Dennis McCarthy.
Betty’s family would like to thank Kelly, Faith, Tammy, Perry and Emily of the Marshfield Dickinson Home Health Hospice for the excellent care and support during her last few days.
Family will greet friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2023 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. Mary’s Church with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating.
