IRON MOUNTAIN — Carol Sue Drake, 87, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday, Dec. 25, 2021 at Freeman Nursing and Rehabilitation Community in Kingsford.

Carol was born May 10, 1934, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Harold and Malvina (LaFreniere) Larson. She graduated from Iron Mountain High School in 1953 and went on to attend St. Joseph School of Nursing in Hancock, graduating with an R.N. degree in 1956.

Carol started her nursing career at Children’s Hospital in Milwaukee and then moved back to the area and was employed at Dickinson County Hospital for a short period of time.

She married Francis Drake on Feb. 1, 1964, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death on Jan. 14, 2004.

For the majority of her career she was employed as a registered nurse at the V.A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain, retiring in 1994.

Carol was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain.

She enjoyed making flower arrangements, crocheting, ceramics and going shopping.

Carol was a kind, loving, devoted and selfless person. She loved to help people in any way she could. Anyone who got to know her loved her. She loved and cherished her family immensely. We will miss her dearly.

Carol is survived by a son, Todd Drake of Iron Mountain; a daughter, Kerry Drake (fiance, Ken Cutler) of St. Germain, Wis; and two grandchildren, Kailee and Logan Drake.

In addition to her parents and husband, Carol was preceded in death by a sister, Beverly Hendricks.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Dec. 30, at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church in Iron Mountain. Fr. Janusz Romanek will offer the Mass of Christian Burial.

Burial will be in Iron Mountain Cemetery Park.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Carol’s memory.
