Donold J. Bugni

GREEN BAY, Wis. — Donold J. “Don” Bugni, 89, on Feb. 25, 2021, peacefully and unexpectedly passed on to his next life while living in Green Bay, Wis.

Don retired from Lakeshore, and he was a long-time resident of Iron Mountain.

Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancy Bugni (nee Helander); and their children, Renee Smith of Green Bay, Randy Bugni of Visalia, Calif., and Rhonda Bednar of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his nephew, Tony Bratton of White Bear Lake, Minn. Don leaves behind more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Dolores Bratton of Milwaukee.

Don was quick to introduce himself with a firm handshake, followed by Don Bugni, Iron Mountain. Don was born on the east side of Iron Mountain, and he lived in California for a short time before returning home to Iron Mountain. Upon returning from California, Don’s Dad, Domenic, purchased the island at Lake Antoine. Together, Don and his dad built the road from the mainland to the island, constructed the original bridge from railroad ties, and built Domenic’s home.

During this time, Don met Nancy Helander, a nurse working at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. They quickly fell in love, and they were married in 1961 at a double wedding with Nancy’s sister, Lois, and her husband, Floyd. Don and Nancy built a house on the island where they raised their three children. Don and Nancy enjoyed hosting family and friends at their home.

The island was a labor of love for Don. There was always work to do, but he enjoyed swimming, gardening, boating, four-wheeling, ice fishing, and nature. Don and Nancy enjoyed camping, traveling, concerts, and spending time with their friends. They often met friends for dinner and then would return to their home for dessert. The men shot pool and the women played Scrabble. In 2019, they moved from their home in town to Green Bay. After moving, Don continued to introduce himself as Don Bugni, Iron Mountain.

On Saturday, June 19, at 10 a.m., at the Community Bible Chapel in Norway, W6507 U.S. 2, Norway, there is a Celebration of Life Service for family and close friends. All friends are invited for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Instead of flowers, please donate to Dickinson County Health System in his honor.
