WPS works to repair outages

IRON MOUNTAIN — Crews continued to work Wednesday to restore power in northern Wisconsin after a weekend ice storm toppled trees and power poles.

Wisconsin Public Service on Tuesday had said it hoped to have most power restored by the end of the day, but nearly 5,000 of its customers remained without service Wednesday afternoon “due to ongoing hazardous conditions.”

As of 6 p.m. Wednesday, WPS listed as out of service 378 customers in Florence County, 424 in Marinette County and 2,053 in Forest County.

Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers on Tuesday declared a state of emergency. The declaration, he said, “will help support local efforts to restore power where there are outages, support local efforts to clear debris, set up warming shelters, and respond to local emerging needs, and keep folks, families, and communities safe.”

Evers’ office said utilities had restored power to more than 130,000 Wisconsin customers as of Tuesday night.

A wintry mix of snow and rain that fell in the region Wednesday was expected to give way to partly sunny skies today and Friday. Temperatures should climb well into the 40s.

We Energies on Wednesday listed just one customer out of service in Dickinson County after more than 10,000 in the area had lost power during the ice storm.

In northern lower Michigan, more than 128,000 customers were still without electricity on Wednesday morning, according to PowerOutage.us, which tracks outages nationwide.

The Mackinac Bridge had to be shut down Wednesday because large chunks of ice were falling from cables and towers. It’s the third consecutive day of bridge interruptions from the ice storm.
