IRON MOUNTAIN — Applications are due Sunday, May 4, for stakeholder seats on the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources’ Wolf Advisory Committee.

The WAC acts as an advisory body to help identify and discuss emerging issues related to wolves in Wisconsin. It provides input and recommendations to the DNR on various topics. The 10 stakeholder seats will be divided evenly among five stakeholder categories, or two each.

The five groups are:

— Hunting and trapping.

— Agricultural and ranching.

— Environmental.

— Conservation science and education.

— At-large, unaffiliated.

The WAC will also be comprised of relevant DNR staff and representatives from government agencies/entities, the Wisconsin Conservation Congress and Wisconsin’s Ojibwe tribes. The stakeholder seats will be filled via a competitive application process and are subject to three-year term limits.

More information, including the committee’s charter, an FAQ document, blank applications and a link to apply, can be found on the DNR’s Wolves in Wisconsin webpage at https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/topic/WildlifeHabitat/wolf.

The first of Wisconsin’s six, one-week spring turkey hunting periods will start Wednesday. Wisconsin’s statewide youth turkey hunt is taking place this weekend.

The spring turkey season in the Upper Peninsula opens Saturday, April 19, and runs through Friday, May 31.

Hunter camouflage is an important part of hunting turkey, but it may also present a problem. The better camouflaged and concealed a hunter is, the more likely they are to be mistaken for a turkey.

Conservation officers say it’s important to avoid wearing red, white or blue. If a fellow hunter sees a flash of those colors through the brush, they could mistake that for a turkey.

The Michigan DNR reported this Upper Peninsula fishing activity:

Munising/Grand Marais: Anglers in Munising were still on the ice catching coho salmon. In Grand Marais, whitefish were being caught off the break wall. Jigging with cut bait seemed to work well for anglers who were ice fishing for coho salmon, and spawn was the preferred bait for whitefish in Grand Marais.

Ontonagon River: Docks remained out of the water at the Ontonagon Marina Boat Launch. Angling efforts on the river were low to nonexistent over the past week. The river water was reported to have been extremely turbid as a result of spring runoff from melting snow upstream.

Ontonagon/Silver City/Union Bay: Docks remained out of the water at each of these locations. Access to the Union Bay boat ramp was limited as the gate into the Union Bay Campground had not yet been opened for the season. The mouth of the Big Iron River in Silver City was still occasionally obstructed by ice drifts from upstream. The marina in Ontonagon was still frozen over with a thin layer of ice. The fish cleaning station at the Ontonagon Marina was still closed for the winter season. Fishing efforts from these ports were extremely low.

Little Bay de Noc: Fishing pressure was very minimal, as anglers are waiting for the ice to leave so they can get out on their boats.

Starting at $2.99/week.
