Norway council OKs new truck for electric department

City also will have power outage early May 5 for ATC line maintenance

NORWAY — The Norway City Council has authorized spending $63,610 for a new truck for the electric department.

Foreman Scott Hegy said the department now has a 2014 Dodge Ram with a standard box and would like a truck with utility tool boxes, which would be safer and more efficient.

The electric department has $100,000 in its budget for capital improvements and new equipment that has not been used, City Manager Dan Stoltman reported.

Stoltman also noted that with an approximately 12-week delivery time on the truck, the purchase could end up in the next budget.

“What is good about when the electric department is looking to do something like this is that we are able to take a vehicle that is still in good condition and pass that down to public works, where it is harder to find the money to purchase new vehicles,” Stoltman said.

The truck will be purchased locally at Era Chevrolet in Norway.

In other business, the council Wednesday:

— Heard from Hegy a city-wide power outage will take place from midnight to 4 a.m. May 5, as American Transmission Company is doing maintenance on a service line going into the city.

— Approved buying a radio for the police department from Motorola Solutions for $5,696. The police department has been replacing one radio a year.

— Voted to let the 906 Adventure Team place a shed in Marion Park for storing mountain bike equipment. The shed will be at the wood line between

the softball field and tennis courts. An agreement will be drawn up stipulating rules and regulations.

— Adopted a resolution declaring May 4-10 as Drinking Water Week.

— Passed a resolution naming May as National Bike Month, plus May 12-18 as Bike to Work Week, May 16 as Bike to Work Day and May 7 as Bike to School Day. The city encourages residents to give bicycling a try and road users to share the road safely with cyclists.

— Adopted a resolution naming May 11-17 as National Police Week and May 15 as Peace Officer Memorial Day. The city salutes the service of law enforcement officers.

— Adopted a resolution naming May 18-24 National Public Works Week. The city calls on residents and civic organizations to acquaint themselves with the issues involved in providing public works for health, safety, comfort and quality of life.
