NMU to host science camp
MARQUETTE — High school students currently in grades 10-12 are invited to attend Northern Michigan University’s week-long Environmental Science Camp, where they will explore the natural resources and scenic landscapes of the Upper Peninsula. The camp will be held July 20-26.
Participants will experience first-hand how scientists incorporate technology and field research to study the changing environment by utilizing the facilities and technology of NMU. They will take part in campus activities and field experiences while learning about a wide variety of environmental topics.
Activities include paddling the AuTrain River to Lake Superior to monitor water quality, examining local minerals and mining practices, and learning how extraction impacts both the environment and society.
Campers will also gain insight into the role of the Great Lakes in transporting resources like iron ore, explore pristine lakes and ancient mountain ranges, and study how people have historically interacted with the region’s landscapes. They will experience modern-day Marquette through lessons on urban planning and the city’s historical development.
The registration fee is $849 and includes all costs for campus housing, meals, transportation and field experiences throughout the week. The fee increases to $949 on June 1.
