Iron Mountain department responds to structure fires

IRON MOUNTAIN — No one was injured in separate structure fires Sunday and Monday, the Iron Mountain Fire Department stated in a news release Thursday.

A fire Monday damaged a residence at 528 N. Antoine Road. Firefighters were dispatched at 11:09 a.m. and arrived within four minutes to find heavy smoke coming from the walk-out basement.

Mutual aid tanker support was requested from Breitung Township and Florence, Wis., as the home was not accessible by hydrants. After forcing entry, crews found heavy fire in the basement.

Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze and cleared the scene by 1:37 p.m.

Iron Mountain Fire Department initially responded with an engine and three firefighters, and a utility truck with two firefighters. An additional four firefighters, an engine and a brush truck arrived after a recall of off-duty personnel.

Assisting were Iron Mountain Police Department, Breitung Township Fire Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Iron Mountain Department of Public Works, and We Energies. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

At 11:50 a.m. Sunday, the department was dispatched to a report of smoke coming from the back windows at 730 E. A St. A crew arrived in less than four minutes to see heavy smoke on the north side of the building.

After forcing entry, crews were able to quickly extinguish the fire and search for occupants, finding none. They then did a thorough search of all levels to ensure the fire had not spread.
