KINGSFORD — Woodland Elementary School in Kingsford kicked off its 14th-annual One Book One School March reading event Friday.
A committee of teachers from the different grade levels select the book the school reads and the activities that go with it through the month.
This year’s selection is “The One and Only Ivan” by Katherine Applegate.
The school has many activities planned based around the book, including a scavenger hunt and class projects, said Kristina Brazeau, principal of the elementary school. Older classes will also be paired with younger classes on some projects. Props based on the book will be displayed throughout the school.
During the month, the classes read at least a chapter a day. Chapters will also be posted online. Secret characters have been hidden throughout the school as well.
The 2012 novel tells the story of Ivan, a silverback gorilla who lives in the Exit 8 Big Top Mall. The book won the 2013 Newberry Medal and several other awards. The story is told from Ivan’s point of view and includes other characters such as Stella, a senior elephant; Bob, a stray dog; and Ruby, a baby elephant.
Some of the books done in the past include: “My Father’s Dragon,” Ruth Stiles Gannett; “The World According to Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney; “The Castle in the Attic” by Elizabeth Winthrop; “The Adventures of Humphrey” by Betty G. Birney; “Because of Winn-Dixie” by Kate DiCamillo; “The Mouse and the Motorcycle” by Beverly Cleary; “Fantastic Mr. Fox” by Roald Dahl; “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl; “The Pet War” by Allan Woodrow; “Charlotte’s Web” by E. B. White; “Kenny & the Dragon” by Tony DiTerlizzi; “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies; and last year’s book, “Life According to Og the Frog” by Betty G. Birney.
The school also starts a read-a-thon Monday that will continue throughout the month.
A family literacy night is planned from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 18.
