Marinette County sheriff details charges on woman who died in jail

MARINETTE, Wis. — Authorities have released more details on the circumstances that put a Pound, Wis., woman in the Marinette County Jail, where she died March 4.

Kristi L. Meverden, 34, had been arrested just after 6 p.m. March 3 for operating while under the influence, third offense, with minor in vehicle enhancer for three children who were with her, according to a news release from Sheriff Randy Miller. She was also cited for operating after revocation and failure to operate with headlights on in the same incident.

Meverden was in custody on a probation hold through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections after they were notified of the arrest, Miller stated.

Marinette County correctional officers were alerted about 7:40 p.m. March 4 about a medical emergency in one of the jail’s cell pods, according to Miller’s original news release late last week.

Correctional officers, Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area EMS and Marinette Emergency Rescue Squad were unable to resuscitate Meverden, according to the release.

The incident remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office and Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office, Miller stated in the release. The matter also was to be reviewed by the Wisconsin Department of Corrections Office of Detention Facilities.

Miller said no further information would be released at this time regarding the investigation.
