Downstate man killed in UP snowmobile crash
AU TRAIN — A 61-year-old man from Edwardsburg, Mich., died Monday in a snowmobile crash in Alger County.
According to the Alger County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on Trail No. 8 near Camp Au Train Road in Au Train Township at 3:20 p.m. Monday.
Deputies said the man failed to navigate a curve in the trail. He was ejected from the snowmobile into several trees and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Excessive speed is believed to be the main factor in the crash, deputies said. Alcohol was determined not to be a factor.
The victim’s name has not been released. An investigation is ongoing.
Deputies were assisted by Alger County EMS, Alger County Rescue 21 and Michigan State Police.
To date, there have been at least eight fatal snowmobile crashes in the U.P. this winter.
