Protesters gather near Dickinson courthouse in opposition to Trump

IRON MOUNTAIN — Unhappy with the first two weeks of the Trump administration, more than a dozen protesters gathered in front of the Dickinson County Courthouse on Wednesday afternoon.

The protest was to show support for the 50501 Movement — 50 states, 50 protests, one day — that was taking part in each state’s capital Wednesday.

Local organizer Kevin Johnson said that the group assembled was not officially a part of 50501, but they felt something needed to be done on the local level.

“I am here because nobody voted for fascism and they are enacting Project 2025 and they are doing it right in front of us and we have to do something,” Johnson said. “Even if we just stand here and say we do not agree, that is what we are doing.”

Other than to express displeasure with Trump, those in attendance were there to protest certain issues. Attendees were unhappy with multi-billionaire Elon Musk’s involvement in the government, elimination of government oversight and potential changes to Social Security.

“The state of things and actions in Washington and with Elon Musk and the president, the consequences that all of us are going to face financially,” Catherine Pirkola said. “People need to know what they are doing is a wrecking ball and you will find out eventually that you are not going to have what you think you have, such as streets that are fixed and schools that run efficiently.”

Johnson said that vehicles passing by have been mostly supportive, with only a few negative comments directed at them.

Johnson added he is seeing regret from many voters.

“If you go online you will see people making videos saying that (Trump) said he was not going to do these things and so people already have buyer’s remorse,” Johnson said.

The local group had cleared Wednesday’s gathering ahead of time with law enforcement and had a self-imposed ban on signs displaying vulgarity or profanity. Many of the protesters said other events may take place in future.

The nationwide 50501 group has voiced opposition to Trump’s executive orders, including pardoning people involved in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
