Jake Witt to speak at Iron County Schools about healthy choices

CRYSTAL FALLS — The Iron Area Health Foundation is bringing Jake Witt to speak to Iron County students about making healthy choices that will provide them with the opportunity for a healthier future.

The presentations will take place Tuesday, March 4, at Forest Park School in Crystal Falls and Thursday, March 6, at West Iron County School in Iron River. The topics he will be speaking on during his presentations will be the dangers of vaping and the negative effects vaping has on physical and mental health, strategies for stress management and developing healthy coping skills, the importance of proper nutrition, emphasizing balanced eating habits and the role of regular exercise in overall well being and general health and wellness and providing practical takeaways for all students to support a healthier, well-rounded lifestyle both for the present and in the future.

Witt is a graduate of Ewen Trout-Creek High School, where he was an outstanding multiple sport athlete. He then attended Michigan Technological University, where he was a member of the basketball team, and then Northern Michigan University, where he was a football letter winner. He was then the first U.P. native in more than 30 years who was drafted by the NFL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Indianapolis Colts as an offensive lineman. After spending two years in the NFL with the Colts, he retired and returned to the U.P. Witt presently is a health and wellness coach at Lac Vieux Desert Health Center, where he coordinates the center’s health and wellness program.

Witt has a bachelor of science degree in applied exercise science and health, he is a certified nutrition coach, certified personal trainer and tobacco interventionist (University of Arizona Healthcare Partnership Program).
