IR man sent to federal prison on meth charge
GRAND RAPIDS — An Iron River man has been sentenced to seven years in federal prison for possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, federal authorities said.
Matthew Joseph Sheehan, 45, was given 84 months Friday in U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan in Marquette, according to a news release from Andrew Birge, acting U.S. Attorney for the Western District.
According to court records, investigators received information that Sheehan was traveling out of state to obtain illicit drugs for distribution in the Upper Peninsula, including methamphetamine, MDMA, and cocaine.
In June 2023, Sheehan was pulled over in Iron County for a traffic infraction. During the traffic stop, officers found nearly a pound of methamphetamine, a smaller quantity of cocaine and more than $6,000 in cash. A subsequent search of Sheehan’s residence recovered additional drugs and more than $37,000, according to the news release.
Online court records show Sheehan pleaded guilty Oct. 24 before U.S. Magistrate Judge Maarten Vermaat.
Michigan State Police, Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team (UPSET), Drug Enforcement Administration, Department of Homeland Security Investigations, Iron River Police Department and Iron County Sheriff’s Office investigated this case.
