Breitung lays out road plans
QUINNESEC — Breitung Township’s portion of Breen Avenue and E Bar D Road improvements will be the recommended projects for the year after the township board backed the work Monday.
In the event that Iron Mountain chooses to redo Beverly Street this year and the Breen Avenue and E Bar D Road projects are within budget, the township also approved doing its portion of Beverly Street.
The township has budgeted $600,000 for road projects in 2025. The board learned the Dickinson County Road Commission only has $65,000 available in 2025 to contribute to countywide road projects.
With the City of Kingsford doing a water and street project on Breen Avenue from Carpenter Avenue to Woodbine Street, the township will continue it to South Van Buren Street. The project paving will be done in conjunction with replacement of lead-copper service lines and additional water system improvements.
The E Bar D Road project was discussed at a Feb. 3 road committee meeting that drew about 20 residents who live along the route.
The project will require some ditch work and tree removal, they were told. A turnaround would be added to the end of the road and the intersection at Lake Antoine Road would be straightened.
The proposed projects will be brought before the Dickinson County Road Commission and, if approved, put out for bids before coming back before the township board.
In other business, the board:
— Went with a $9,400 bid from R&A Outdoor Services of Iron Mountain to demolish a building at 3430 Wells St. that has been deemed dangerous. Other bids received were $11,800 from Bill Neuens Enterprises of Iron Mountain and $11,000 for Scott Morin Excavating of Niagara, Wis.
— Approved a request from the Border Hound Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club for the fire department to be on hand with equipment at the club’s event June 13-14 at Lake Antoine Park. The club will be presenting a donation from funds raised to the fire department.
— Selected the township’s Fire Station No. 3 for a special board meeting at 7 p.m. Monday to discuss overall operations of the fire department, equipment replacement schedule and future development of a training facility and fire station.
— Accepted the donation of a bench from lifelong Quinnesec resident Barbara Lundin in memory of her husband, Marvin. The bench will be placed along River Street, overlooking the ballfield and next to the walking path.
