Back to the Present

The Daily News is bringing back photos of “yesteryears.” Each week, an historical photograph will be posted on The Daily News’ Facebook page. Readers will be asked to identify the location, as well as share a memorable experience of the location. “Back to the Present” will then be published in the Wednesday edition, including a current photo. Readers can comment on The Daily News’ Facebook page, or email tcastelaz@ironmountaindailynews.com with subject “Back to the Present.”

This week’s Back to the Present, provided by the Menominee Range Historical Museum, is a 1940s view of Pine Mountain Ski Jump in Iron Mountain, locally known as “Giant Pine Mountain.”

Construction of the original 156-feet-high wood scaffolding began in 1937 and was completed in 1938.

Pine Mountain hosted its first competition in 1939. That first year, U.S. jumper Bob Roecker went 257 feet for the record distance.

In 1948, the outrun was dug out. Then in 1977, the inrun tower was raised to 176 feet after a fire.

Numerous other renovations have been done over the decades.

The longest official jump in Pine Mountain’s history was 472 feet by Clemens Aigner of Austria in 2020.

In May 2020, Kiwanis Ski Club broke ground on its $3 million major renovation to raise the ski hill to current International Ski Federation, or FIS, standards.

The 2025 FIS Continental Cup is set to take place Feb. 21-23. Ski buttons are available at local businesses.

Starting at $2.99/week.
