This week’s Back to the Present features St. Mary Catholic Church in Norway.

The first photo is a 1909 postcard of the original St. Mary Catholic Church and School, at the west end of Cyclops Avenue on Summit Hill (Norway Hill) and the parochial school. Smoke from the Aragon No. 5 Mine smokestack is visible behind the church.

Five different priests served the Catholics in the Norway area from 1890 to 1900.

With population growing, in 1904, the first remodeling project was completed. Forty-feet were added to the church as well as redecorating, new altars, stations of the cross and stained glass windows. Many of the windows, statues and furnishings were gifts from early parishioners to perpetuate memories of their families and were later moved to the new church in 1928.

St. Mary purchased a lot at the corner of Main Street and Fourth Avenue in 1920 with the Oliver Mining Co. then donated three additional lots.

In l926, Father Erasmus Dooley was appointed pastor, who was the business administrator responsible for building and financing the new church at 401 Main St. on the eve of the Depression.

They relocated many of the interior pieces including communion railings, windows, confessionals, pews, the church bell and the wood flooring for the parish hall. Approximate cost was $75,000.

Properties on Sunset Hill were sold to private parties for salvage.

The new church was dedicated in November 1929.

Over the years the church received many makeovers. In 1948, new pews were purchased and the church hall and kitchen were remodeled and the previously mentioned rectory constructed.

The first major renovation came in 1992, with an oak elevation and redo of the sanctuary, along with new altar, sanctuary furniture, carpet and refinishing of the pews and some wallpaper and painting.

An elevator was added in 1999 and in 2003 they upgraded the electrical system, repaired plaster and completely repainted and decorated the church interior.

The 2018 remodel was done after they had water issues in the church basement area. They ended up renovating about 10,000 square feet.

Then in 2021, the church underwent a three-month major renovation that included replacing the floors, pews and lighting.

The present rectory on Norway Street was built in l952.

The final photo shows St. Mary Catholic Church as it appears today.
