Austria’s Fettner ties own hill record at Giant Pine

Norway's Johansson claims second victory; fourth event set for Sunday

IRON MOUNTAIN — Olympic champion Manuel Fettner starred today for a second straight day at Pine Mountain’s FIS Continental Cup, tying the hill record of 461 feet that he set during Friday’s opening meet.

Fettner placed first in the morning competition of today’s doubleheader, gliding 440 feet on his best ride. On his first jump in the afternoon session, he uncorked the 461-footer that stands as the longest jump since hill renovations — including a new scaffold — were undertaken in 2020.

A fourth Continental Cup meet hosted by the Kiwanis Ski Club is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.

On Friday, Club President Nick Blagec described the tournament as “unreal, the best jumping I’ve ever seen.”

The 39-year-old Fettner had a 461-foot-jump on his first ride Friday when he placed fourth after receding to 410 feet on his second effort. After testing the hill’s limits with his record leaps, Fettner in both instances moved to a lower gate on subsequent rides.

Friday’s winner, Robert Johansson of Norway, rallied to a first-place finish in today’s afternoon competition with jumps of 436 and 435 feet. The FIS scoring system allows for gate/wind compensation, which is included in each skier’s point total, along with distance and style grades.

Fettner’s second ride in the afternoon event was 412 feet and he placed second.

Finishing third was Markus Eisenbichler of Germany with jumps of 443 and 389 feet. Fourth was Maciej Kot of Poland at 422 and 428 feet while Jonas Schuster of Austria claimed the fifth spot on the podium with jumps of 415 and 410 feet.

In the morning event, Eisenbichler placed second and had the longest ride of that competition at 450 feet.

Rounding out the podium in the morning competition were Zak Mogel of Slovenia, third; Austria’s Schuster, fourth; and Kot, fifth. Mogel’s longest ride was 440 feet, while Schuster had a jump of 427 feet and Kot sailed 420 feet on both of his attempts.

Andrew Urlaub was the top U.S. finisher on the day, placing 21st in the 10-team international field in the morning event. His best jump was 413 feet.

On Friday, Urlaub had cracked the top 10 with leaps of 435 feet and 402 feet.

Fettner won an Olympic gold medal when Austria claimed the large hill team event at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing, China. His 461-foot jumps are 11 feet shy of the all-time Pine Mountain record set by Austria’s Clemens Aigner in 2020, just before work on a new scaffold began.

The Kiwanis Ski Club has hosted competitions at Pine Mountain since 1939. Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson is the title sponsor for this year’s Continental Cup.

Starting at $2.99/week.
