6 days to ski jumps

Kiwanis Ski Club jumper Willie Erickson is shown at age 16, when he won the 1956 U.S. Class C national championship. The next year he won the Class B championship and in 1959 he was the national Class A champion. He competed with the U.S. team in the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley, Calif., along with fellow Kiwanis jumpers Butch Wedin and Richard “Cussy” Rahoi. He met his future wife in Lahti, Finland, while training in 1961 for the World Games and later would return with other retired ski jumpers over the course of 25 years to attend the annual Lahti Ski Games. Erickson will be featured on “Discovering” at 6:30 p.m. Monday on WLUC-TV6, in conjunction with the 2025 FIS Continental Cup at Pine Mountain, which starts Friday and extends through Feb. 23.
