UP man charged with gas thefts

LAKE LINDEN — A retired Lake Linden Department of Public Works employee has been accused of stealing thousands of dollars worth of gasoline from the village.

Ronald Schmitt, 71, was arraigned Tuesday in Houghton County 97th District Court on three felony charges: Using a computer to commit a crime, larceny greater than $1,000 but less than $20,000 and financial transaction device-stealing/retaining without consent.

Schmitt is accused of stealing gasoline from the Department of Public Works for his personal use over the past 12 years, according to a news release from the Michigan State Police-Calumet Post. An investigation revealed Schmitt had allegedly taken gasoline using a key fob meant for fueling Department of Public Works vehicles.

Police claim Schmitt retained the fuel key fob after his retirement in 2012 and continued using it, taking more than $28,000 of gasoline.

State Police opened an investigation in partnership with the Lake Linden Village Police Department after Lake Linden Department of Public Works raised concerns. The investigation included MSP reportedly catching Schmitt attempting to fuel his personal truck using the stolen key fob.

Police said that due to statute of limitations restrictions, charges can only be filed reflecting the past six years, despite the thefts appearing to have gone on for a longer period of time.

Schmitt was released Tuesday on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond. He is expected to be back in court Feb. 3.

Starting at $2.99/week.
