Two teens in custody after vehicle thefts, police pursuit in Marinette-Menominee

MENOMINEE — Two teens — one who had self-inflicted injuries — were apprehended in Menominee Township on Thursday following a string of vehicle thefts and an interstate vehicle pursuit, Menominee County Sheriff Darrin Kudwa said.

At about 9:09 a.m. Thursday, local law enforcement agencies were notified that a stolen vehicle involved in a gas drive-off in Marinette, Wis., was located in Menominee. Officers were advised that the suspects in this incident had been involved in numerous vehicle thefts spanning multiple counties in Wisconsin, Kudwa said.

Officers from the Menominee Police Department attempted to perform a traffic stop, but the vehicle did not stop, initiating a high-speed pursuit through Menominee. The suspect vehicle ultimately came to a stop at a residence near U.S. 41 and Elmwood Road No. 4 in Menominee Township, where the two male occupants fled into the woods with a firearm, Kudwa said in a news release.

K-9 teams and drone teams from multiple local law enforcement agencies were utilized to locate the subjects, who had separated when fleeing into the woods. An unarmed 15-year-old male was quickly apprehended.

The second individual, a teenage male, was located via drone and pursued through wooded areas and open fields. The second individual was located with self-inflicted injuries and transported to Aurora Bay Area Medical Center, Kudwa said.

At this time, there is no danger to the public, the sheriff said. The investigation is ongoing, he added.

Assisting the sheriff’s office were Menominee Police Department, Marinette Police Department, Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, Aurora Bay Area ambulance services, Emergency Rescue Squad Inc., and Menominee County 911.
