Two killed in Marquette County head-on collision

GWINN — Two adults were killed and three teenagers injured in a head-on collision Friday afternoon on M-35 in Forsyth Township.

A 37-year-old Gwinn man and a 21-year-old Negaunee man were both pronounced dead after the crash just before 4 p.m. Friday near Little Lake. Three freshman boys from Gwinn schools were injured in the crash, according to a letter sent by Gwinn Area Schools Superintendent Sara Croney.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share news of a tragic traffic accident that occurred at approximately 4 p.m. on Friday … involving members of our school community. A devastating car accident has claimed the life of a beloved parent and left three of our ninth grade

boys injured. Two have been airlifted to Milwaukee for care, one remains in Marquette. Thankfully, we have been informed that the students are now in stable condition,” the letter said. “Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with the family and friends of those affected by this unimaginable loss. As a close-knit community, we stand together in support of the loved ones grieving during this difficult time.”

The names of the victims involved in the crash have yet to be released.

According to Croney’s letter, support staff and guidance counselors will be at Gwinn schools today to comfort and assist students, faculty and families.

Authorities have said little about the incident. In addition to Michigan State Police, other local agencies on site included Marquette County Sheriff’s Office and the Forsyth Township Police Department.
