QUINNESEC — A streak of reliably cold weather has allowed some area ice skating rinks to open for the season.

Breitung Township has a rink in Quinnesec on Lincoln Avenue between the baseball field and the soccer field.

The township also has a rink on South Jackson by the Little League field in East Kingsford.

The warming shacks at the Breitung ice rinks are open from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, noon to 8 p.m. Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

The rinks may be used from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. even when the warming shacks are closed.

The Sandlot at 690 Main St. in Niagara, Wis., is open for skating from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursdays, 4:30 to 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, and 2 to 5 p.m. Sundays. Skates can be rented on site and a snack bar is available.

Area rinks still planned this winter but not yet ready for use include Strawberry Lake in Norway, Lodal Park in Kingsford and City Park in Iron Mountain.

Starting at $2.99/week.
