Stauber to continue as chair of Iron County Board

CRYSTAL FALLS — Commissioner Mark Stauber will remain chair of the Iron County Board and Commissioner Jacob Conery vice chair.

At the board’s organizational meeting Friday morning, Commissioner Ean Bruette was named finance chair, the position previously held by Mike Stafford, who resigned from the board after winning the Bates Township supervisor post in the November election.

Stafford’s resignation also means the board must find a replacement to fill the vacancy.

The term will begin immediately after appointment and run through Dec. 31, 2026, when the appointed commissioner would need to run in the 2026 election cycle for the additional two years of the term.

The position has a salary of $625 per month, with additional meeting pay for committee work and mileage reimbursement.

Anyone interested in filling the position should submit a letter of interest to the Iron County Board of Commissioners, 2 S. Sixth St., Suite 7, Crystal Falls, MI 49920. The candidate needs to be a registered voter of District 2, which consists of Bates Township and Iron River precincts 1 and 2.

The board hopes to fill the vacancy as soon as possible; however, the posting will remain open until a qualified applicant is found.

In other business, the board:

— Passed a resolution designating Steven Tinti as civil counsel for a period of six months. Commissioner Patti Peretto recommended the six-month term, noting Tinti had expressed a desire to possibly retire, so the county should begin exploring its options.

Peretto added if Tinti decides to remain on, another resolution can be adopted.

— Approved a resolution authorizing Treasurer Melanie Camps to deposit county funds.

Starting at $2.99/week.
