MARQUETTE — The Marquette Maritime Museum was recently awarded a $1,800 grant from the Historical Society of Michigan through its Michigan History Alliance grant program.
The grant money will be used to purchase archival storage materials for preservation of a collection of maritime photographs, documents, prints and other research materials from author, historian and former Marquette City Commissioner Frederick Stonehouse.
“We’re thrilled that we are able to award twice as many grants in 2025 and provide assistance to so many history organizations around the state,” said Becky Kurtz, the Historical Society of Michigan’s director of development and member services. “The Historical Society of Michigan is itself a medium-sized nonprofit, and the grant funds come from our annual endowment draw, not our operating budget. The Consumers Energy Foundation has allowed us to double the impact for our member organizations.”
The Marquette Maritime Museum is a nonprofit that has been operating in the former Marquette City Waterworks building since the museum’s opening in 1984.
The museum is host to many events including school field trips, Lake Superior Day and the Ghosts of Lighthouse Point fundraiser.
The museum will reopen for the summer in May.
Currently, the museum is offering its winter lecture series, Maritime History on Tap, at the Ore Dock Brewing Company.
The next lecture in the series will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Eastern time on Tuesday, Feb. 4.
