IRON RIVER — An Iron River man has been arrested after reportedly making threats toward Iron County residents and children via the internet, authorities said.

The 40-year-old was taken into custody Wednesday night, just after Michigan State Police from the Iron Mountain post began investigating the terroristic threats complaint, according to an MSP news release.

The man’s name was withheld pending arraignment and the incident remains under investigation. MSP was assisted by the Iron River Police Department, Iron County Sheriff’s Department, Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Aspirus EMS.

In a letter posted on the West Iron County Public Schools website, Superintendent Kevin Schmutzler said MSP did notify the district of the threats and officials “were prepared to cancel school if necessary” today but didn’t “thanks to the quick and decisive action of our local agencies” in arresting the suspect.

“This cooperation enabled us to respond proactively to the potential threat in our community, and plan accordingly to ensure it was safe to open school today,” Schmutzler wrote, adding that WIC also has a full-time school resource officer on campus.

West Iron County had to deal with reported threats twice in 2023. Classes were canceled Oct. 10, 2023, after the the school resource officer learned of “threatening comments regarding school safety,” Schmutzler said at the time. Classes resumed the next day after an investigation determined no immediate threats. District schools then went into a “soft lockdown” Nov. 1, 2023, after a former student allegedly made a potential threat; a 15-year-old was later taken into custody, according to the Daily News article.

Neighboring Forest Park School District in Crystal Falls canceled classes Sept. 6 and shifted its home football game against Stephenson to North Dickinson County’s field in Felch Township in response to an alleged threat to the school a day earlier, local law enforcement said at the time.
