IM man gets prison term in meth case
IRON MOUNTAIN — An Iron Mountain man will spend eight to 25 years in prison for possession of methamphetamine.
Wayne Scott Brennan was convicted in Dickinson County Circuit Court in October of controlled substance-possession of methamphetamine/ecstasy after a vehicle he’d been in was found to have 27.95 grams of methamphetamine.
During the sentencing hearing Tuesday, Brennan was deemed to be a fourth-offense habitual offender as well.
At the trial, Kingsford Public Safety Officer Richard Wright testified he responded June 4, 2023, to a domestic violence call and Brennan happened to be at the house. Brennan’s girlfriend, Kyleyann Hull, was in the car in the driveway and was uncooperative with officers, while Brennan refused to come out of the house.
After Hull fled, a search of the vehicle turned up two packets of methamphetamine on the passenger side. Brennan was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant.
Granted immunity, Hull testified the methamphetamine was purchased on a recent trip to Milwaukee for Brennan’s work and Brennan had no knowledge of the methamphetamine.
But when Brennan took the stand on his own behalf, his testimony conflicted with Hull’s and neither could provide many details of the trip.
After deliberating for nearly four hours, the jury returned with a guilty verdict.
Brennan requested a new attorney before he could be sentenced in December. Daniel Jaspen was replaced by William Hougaboom.
Dickinson County Circuit Judge Mary Barglind noted Tuesday that while Brennan has a strong work ethic, his criminal record is considerable.
“You have the ability to be a productive member of society, so the only explanation for your continuing pattern of criminal behavior is that it is a choice you make,” Barglind said.
Brennan was also sentenced for two counts of failure to appear at court proceedings and was given 93 days for each count, to run concurrently with the possession charge. Brennan did receive 147 days credit for time he has already served.
In another matter, Brennan is facing charges of felony controlled substance — delivery/manufacture-methamphetamine and the high court misdemeanor of controlled substance — maintaining a drug house. Brennan is also charged as a habitual offender — fourth offense.
Brennan pleaded not guilty to those charges in November, with a pretrial conference set for Jan. 20.
