Full slate of events — including Tip-Up Town — set for Feb. 1

IRON MOUNTAIN — The forecast looks promising as Sagola Township Sportsmen’s Club prepares to host Tip-Up Town of the U.P. on Saturday, Feb. 1.
A high of 30 degrees is predicted as daytime temperatures in the 20s or 30s are expected to be the norm over the next week.
Registration at Tip-Up Town — the 51st annual event — begins at 7 a.m. at the clubhouse 4 miles north of Channing on Sawyer Lake Road. Prizes will be given out at 5 p.m. Buttons are $10 each, or $5 for ages 17 and under. Buttons are required only for the fishing contest — admission to the clubhouse is free.
Food will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on derby day. There are cash prizes in adult and youth classes.
Also on Saturday, Feb. 1, Northern Lites Bar will host a fishing derby from sunrise to 4:30 p.m. at Fisher Lake in Florence, Wis. Register before Feb. 1 at the Northern Lites, 4838 Highway 70, Florence.
Entry fee is $5 and there are cash prizes for bluegill, perch, crappie, walleye and northern.
Roadhouse 139 at 3322 Highway 139 in Long Lake, Wis., also has a fishing derby on Saturday, Feb. 1. Measure fish on Long Lake from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pay a $10 entry fee by 9 a.m. on derby day and all proceeds go the Long Lake Association.
A new event, Chili in the Woods, will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, on the Lake Emily Trail on County Road D south of Florence. Attendees can hike, snowshoe or ski, depending on the snow levels. There will be free refreshments and a campfire, along with snowshoes as needed.
The event is sponsored by The Friends of the Florence Wild Rivers Interpretive Center. Any donations given at the event will help improve the exhibits and displays at the Wild Rivers Interpretive Center in Florence.
Saturday, Feb. 1, also marks the 20th annual trappers event at the Frank Rodman Community Center in Hermansville. The Arduin Brothers New Trappers Workshop takes place from 8 a.m. until about 2 p.m. Admission is free and it’s open to the public.
There will be trapping demonstrations for all ages along with free kits for youngsters.
Trevor Barnes of Barnes Hide and Fur in lower Michigan will be on hand to buy fur, and he will have a wide selection of trapping gear for sale. Those who need specific trapping equipment can call him at 269-967-4475 so he will bring it with him. Barnes will answer any questions about the fur market as well.

This Sunday, Keyes Peak Ski Hill will host a winter party from noon to 3 p.m. at 4960 Highway 101 in Florence. It will feature free skiing, snowboarding and tubing at the hill, with free equipment rentals available for ages 3 to 19.
