Florence County silo fire could generate smoke for some time

TOWN OF HOMESTEAD — A silo is expected to smolder for days or even weeks after it caught fire Friday in Florence County, authorities said.

A motorist flagged down Florence County Sheriff’s Office deputies about 7:36 a.m. to alert them about the silo fire at 1841 County Road U in the Town of Homestead.

Firefighters from several departments were able to contain the fire to the silo and keep it from spreading to several other structures in the area, according to a news release posted on the sheriff’s office Facebook page.

Homestead Fire was assisted by fire departments from Florence, Aurora and Fence, along with the Florence County Highway Department.

The news release advised that while the fire is contained, “with a silo fire you will see smoke for several days or even weeks. The fire department will be inspecting the silo in the future.”

The sheriff’s office thanked “all the responding volunteers as they are the heartbeat of the community.”

Starting at $2.99/week.
