Breitung board picks new clerk and trustee

HANNAH CHRIVIA

QUINNESEC — Two Breitung Township residents who ran unsuccessfully for positions on the township board in 2024 now have a seat after the resignations of Clerk Karie Taff and Trustee Paul Taff.

Karie Taff was appointed to the clerk position in June 2024 and won a full four-year term in the November elections. She submitted her resignation Jan. 17, effective Jan. 31.

Paul Taff was reelected in November to a second four-year term as a trustee but submitted his resignation Jan. 21, effective immediately.

The resignations were accepted Monday, with the township board turning to candidates from the November election to fill the vacancies.

Hannah Chrivia, who ran for township clerk in November as a write-in candidate, was tapped for that position.

MICHAEL DAY

“I am interested in being a bigger part of the community, being on the board and making the hard decisions and getting more younger people involved and coming to these meetings,” Chrivia said.

Michael Day is returning to the board as a trustee. Day was appointed in December 2023 to fill a vacancy when Rich Wales resigned from the board. Day lost the seat after being edged out in a five-way Republican primary in August. Sharon Reuter was elected as a new trustee in November.

“I would love to serve on the board again, I would like to thank all of you for your confidence,” Day said. “It has been an absolute honor and privilege to be on the board.”

Both of the board appointments are until the November 2026 election, when they would need to run to fill the remainder of the four-year term.

In other business, the board:

— Agreed with a personnel committee recommendation to offer two part-time office employees the opportunity to be full-time in the election manager/office assistant position. The personnel committee will also interview candidates for the position of administrative assistant, with duties related to code enforcement, zoning, and superintendent and office support. A recommendation is expected for the first board meeting in March.

— Approved a short-term work agreement covering Helen Schaller and Jamie Tinti, former township deputy clerks, to run through the end of the year. Schaller and Tinti would assist with any election issues that arise while new employees are getting certified. The board is to be notified and updated if the services are actually used.

— Learned the State of Michigan Bureau of Elections will perform an audit of the November election Feb. 5. All recounts requested for the election statewide are complete.
