Mobile food pantry on Wednesday in Kingsford
KINGSFORD — Feeding America West Michigan is bringing a Mobile Food Pantry to Dickinson County on Wednesday. Free food is available to all households experiencing food insecurity.
The location for the Mobile Food Pantry is Redemption Hill Church, 332 S. Carpenter Ave. in Kingsford. This is a drive-thru food distribution that will begin promptly at 10 a.m. Central time.
Check-in/registration will begin at least an hour beforehand. Customers should be prepared for a lengthy wait in line.
Both Feeding America customers and visitors to Redemption Hill Church will use the entrance on the north side of the church, off Carpenter Avenue. Walk-in customers and customers arriving in taxis will use this same entrance and will be directed by a volunteer as to where they should wait inside the building.
Feeding America volunteer parking will be behind the First Presbyterian Church next door, 395 Hamilton Ave.
Restrooms are available to customers and volunteers inside Redemption Hill Church.
FAWM defines a household as food insecure if it already receives government food assistance such as SNAP, WIC, FDPIR, CSFP or SSI; if total household income is at or below 200% of the poverty level, or approximately $1,200 a week for a household of four (go to “Michigan TEFAP” online for more information); or if the household is simply in need of emergency food regardless of income level.
Based on this definition, a large number of individuals and families in Dickinson County and the surrounding area qualify to receive free groceries. FAWM requires information about each customer household at time of registration but does not ask for proof of eligibility, identity or residency.
Customers will be asked to provide full name, full address, information about household size and make-up, and reason for needing food. If a driver is picking up groceries for another household, the same household information must be provided in a signed note by an adult member of the household that is not present.
There is a maximum three households per vehicle. Customers should have in their vehicles boxes, laundry baskets, totes or coolers where volunteers can place the food.
Questions about the Mobile Food Pantry or about volunteering should be directed to the site coordinator, Anda Tavonatti, at 906-239-6778, not to Redemption Hill Church.
This Mobile Food Pantry is made possible by Feeding America West Michigan and local partner agency Holy Trinity Episcopal Church of Iron Mountain.
