IRON MOUNTAIN — The speed limit on Carpenter Avenue in Iron Mountain has been raised to 35 mph under a traffic control order issued by Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Transportation — an increase of 10 mph.

The limit in Kingsford from Breen Avenue to Hamilton Avenue will go to 40 mph, an increase of 5 mph.

MDOT and MSP conducted a speed study on Carpenter Avenue after a March 10 crash at the intersection of West F Street that claimed the life of an 84-year-old Iron Mountain woman.

The impetus for the study was the fatality and conflicting traffic control orders, Iron Mountain City Manager Jordan Stanchina said. He informed the city council of the new limits in a memo Friday.

A speed limit of 45 mph will remain as is in Breitung Township on M-95 at the entry into Michigan from Wisconsin. It will turn to 40 mph at Breen Avenue. Formerly, the speed limit on M-95/Carpenter Avenue in Kingsford was 35 mph.

The former Carpenter Avenue speed limit from Hamilton Avenue north through Iron Mountain was 25 mph.

Starting at $2.99/week.
