Florence County OKs annual forest work plan

FLORENCE, Wis. — The Florence County Board on Tuesday authorized a forestry and parks work plan for 2025.

The plan calls for 10 timber sales on about 600 acres of land. About 200 acres will be aspen regeneration cuts, with the balance being northern hardwoods, red oak and red pine stands.

Sales will occur in the spring and fall. If an emergency sale is needed due to flooding, storms, insects or disease, that will take place separate from the allowable cut.

County timber sales generated $446,069 in revenue in 2024, slightly more than 2023 but still down compared with previous years, according to the plan.

Board Chairman Chad Hedmark asked if an emergency sale could affect the next year’s harvest amount.

Supervisor Henry Sullivan, who helped develop harvest schedules when he was with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, said the amounts could be averaged out over a 10-year plan.

Also included in the plan:

— The county has one site that will be sprayed with a herbicide in late summer of next year and planted in

spring 2026. While the county is struggling to find cost-effective means of spraying, it does have a sustainable forestry grant for $19,200 to help with the process.

— The county receives $336 per mile from the Wisconsin Department of Transportation to maintain 36.39 miles of forest roads, or more than $12,200. It has a stockpile of crushed gravel to be used for road upkeep. As the budget allows, one mile of road will be identified for resurfacing each year.

— The county will continue to maintain 149 miles of snowmobile trails and 66 miles of ATV/UTV trails.

Starting at $2.99/week.
