Dressed in holiday style: Downtown Norway welcomes the Christmas season
NORWAY — Downtown Norway will soon gleam with holiday spirit as the city gets ready to host its Christmas celebration on Friday.
Christmas in Norway brings back all the annual traditions, as well as adding some new features.
“It’s great to see everything come together — we are really excited,” said Norway Downtown Development Authority event coordinator Gina Zanon.
Activities kick off with a Winter Market from 3:30 to 7 p.m. at the American Legion Hall on Main Street.
Participants will bring a variety of homemade items, including ravioli, artisan bread, bagels, pasties, cookies, candy, teas, jams and jelly.
Local vendors will also offer on-site custom T-shirts and laser pieces.
“We have an equal amount of food and craft vendors, which is nice to see,” said Market Coordinator Debbie Hood, noting they are currently full with a few on a waiting list.
“We will even have homemade dog treats available,” she added.
Norway High School seniors will have a hot cocoa bar and s’more kits for sale at the legion hall. All the proceeds will go towards their all-night graduation party.
Kids will be assisted by adults to roast marshmallows at the fire pit in the Veterans Square.
“Debbie (Hood) made the fire pit to include fencing around to keep the little ones at a safe distance,” Zanon said.
Norway High School art class students will offer face painting at the hall for a donation to raise money.
“They also did all the artwork on the downtown windows,” Zanon said. “The kids were amazing — they really got into it.”
Danielson Greenhouse will have wreaths and greens available for sale at the Veterans Square park area.
“We are going to decorate the hall so it’s festive,” Hood said.
The Dickinson County Library will provide arts and craft opportunities for the kids from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the lower level of City Hall.
“Kids can then go outside to watch the parade and come back for a visit with Santa,” she said.
Mrs. Claus will officially light the city’s Christmas tree near the bandshell at 5:30 p.m.
They will also unveil an all-new display for the bandshell this year.
The annual fireworks display from Norway Hill will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the parade down Main Street.
All community businesses and individuals are encouraged to take part in the parade.
At the conclusion of the parade, Santa and Mrs. Claus will welcome kids to share their wishes at City Hall.
All children who come to visit will receive two tickets to enter into the raffle drawings sponsored by the DDA.
“One will be for the larger prizes and the other for a smaller prize item,” she said.
Prizes include bikes, remote control cars, Squishmallows, along with many more.
“This is something to give back to the community,” Zanon said.
Several businesses will stay open later for shoppers.
Hood said they wanted to elevate this year’s festivities to be more than fireworks and parade.
“I think it’s a really good step in the right direction to make it an annual event,” she said. “We want people to come and spend three hours downtown.”
Zanon added they have received great response and are hoping for a “packed house” Friday night.
