Dickinson board OKs choices for boards and committees

IRON MOUNTAIN — Wanda Khor of Iron Mountain was reappointed Monday to a five-year term on the Dickinson County Library Board while three members of the Dickinson County Fair Board were reappointed to three-year terms.

Khor, who has served on the library board since 2020, was reappointed in a 4-1 vote by the county board. Commissioner Ann Martin supported the only other applicant, Laura Skrumbellos of Felch Township.

Reappointed to the fair board by unanimous vote were James DalSanto of Channing, Michael Gregg of Vulcan and Beth Bray of Vulcan. Rebecca Padgett of Kingsford was also an applicant.

Khor and Skrumbellos addressed the board before the library vote and Khor received comments of support from Megan Rose, library director; William Cummings, library board chairman; and Donna Hayes, a library board member.

Skrumbellos said she hoped to bring “a new face” to the five-member board, representing the Felch and Norway township areas.

Monday’s session marked the last regular meeting of the year for four longtime county board members who are leaving their posts in 2025 after being voted out of office — Martin, Barbara Kramer, John Degenaer Jr. and Chairman Henry Wender.

Each of them spoke and thanked constituents for the opportunity to serve. Wender, a 35-year veteran of the board, offered the lightest remark, saying, “Maybe it was time for an old man to step aside anyway.”

Kramer said she’s proud that the county is an excellent position — “financially sound and poised for continued economic growth and progress.”

Commissioner Joe Stevens, who will be the lone returning member, commended the accomplishments of the departing commissioners. “They are all great people who will continue serving the county any way they can,” he said.

Two commissioners, Martin and Degenaer, were named Monday to fill vacancies that have arisen on county panels. It was pointed out there were no other applicants.

Martin will serve a partial term on the Northpointe Behavioral Health Board to expire March 31, 2027. She had previously served as the county board’s representative on the tri-county community mental health agency board. The vacancy was created by the recent resignation of Ralph Kramer, one of four general public appointees from Dickinson County.

Degenaer was appointed to a three-year term on the Department of Human Services Board expiring Oct. 31, 2027, which will also include service on the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility Board.

In another matter, the county board during a special meeting Thursday approved a job description for a part-time county fair manager. Degenaer, who has long chaired the fair board, said he is applying for the position.

During citizen’s time, Jeff Gurchinoff of Kingsford and Shannon Unrein of Norway Township raised objections to the possibility of Degenaer taking on that paid role, claiming the position isn’t needed.

Further discussion by the county board is expected during a finance meeting at 10 a.m. Thursday in the correctional center conference room.
