KINGSFORD — Kingsford Public Safety Department doused a Christmas Day fire at a home on Lawrence Street where a pet knocked over a heat lamp.

KPS was dispatched at about 3:32 p.m. Wednesday to a fire that started on the main floor of the residence and dropped into a crawl space, according to a news release.

The homeowner attempted to put water on the fire but was forced to retreat due to heavy smoke, officers said.

A crew arrived within two minutes and fire personnel were quickly able to contain the fire to its area of origin. Officers cleared the site by 4:50 p.m. The homeowner and pets were uninjured.

Assisting were Iron Mountain Police Department, Dickinson County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin Electric and DTE Energy.

Kingsford Public Safety reminds everyone to get out and stay out during a fire. Call 911 as soon as possible as fires evolve quickly and the sooner firefighters arrive the better chance they have at mitigating the damage.
