Summit Lake Fire contained

KENTON –The Summit Lake Fire that began Oct. 18 in eastern Baraga County is now considered 90% contained after burning through more than 300 acres in the Ottawa National Forest, according to U.S. Forest Service officials.

The fire, in the northwest corner of the McCormick Wilderness between Summit Lake and Evergreen Lake, has “weakened to a minimalist state due to firefighting, precipitation and low temperatures over the past several days,” USFS officials said in the final update on the fire.

“There may be some possible smoldering in dead and downed debris over the 328 acres of the fire, but the containment of the hazard is currently at 90%,” the update states.

Officials reopened the north half of the wilderness area Nov. 6, though firefighters will continue to monitor the area. Officials said the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Starting at $2.99/week.
