Norway student designs poster for Kingsford Christmas celebration
KINGSFORD — The annual Christmas event in Kingsford will be advertised for the first time with artwork created by high school students.
Fourteen designs were submitted by students in the Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District tech center graphic communications class. Two designs were selected by the Kingsford City Council.
The winner was Erin Masselink, with Deanna Deyo as runner-up. Both are Norway High School students.
“I thought this was another fun way to get involvement from students for our community event,” said Jennifer Castro, administrative assistant/accounts payable clerk, who has been organizing the Christmas event for the past several years.
“I contacted Rebecca Frates, the graphic communications teacher, early in September and asked if the students would be interested in designing our poster for our event,” she said.
The city’s Christmas event will be 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the Kingsford Armory, 401 S. Carpenter Ave. The tree lighting will take place at the start of the event at 4:30 p.m. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be arriving by Kingsford Public Safety fire truck.
The event was originally at the City Hall but proved so popular it was moved to the Armory last year.
They will have a photo booth, gift bags, a craft table and games. They will serve hot chocolate and cookies throughout the event.
The Kingsford Music Department and Woodland Elementary students will provide musical entertainment.
The event is sponsored by First National Bank & Trust, Ace Hardware, the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Federal Credit Union, CJ Graphics, Grede, Kiwanis Club of Iron Mountain and Kingsford, the Michigan Army National Guard, 100.7 Radio Now and The Daily News.
