Dickinson County sees strong early voting in Kingsford

KINGSFORD — Early in-person voting is proving popular in Dickinson County.

As of 2:45 p.m. Thursday, with three days still to go, 2,263 voters had cast their ballots for Tuesday’s general election at Kingsford City Hall, the county’s only early voting site.

In comparison, 290 in Dickinson County voted early for the presidential primary in February, when President Joe Biden was still seeking the Democratic nomination and former president Donald J. Trump the top spot on the Republican ticket.

For the most part, crowds in this round of early voting have been manageable since the site opened Saturday, Dickinson County Clerk Carol Bronzyk said.

“The first day, Saturday, there was a very long wait, over an hour,” Bronzyk said. “Since then we have not had any (delays) — it has just been steady with people going right through.”

The higher turnout reflects what has been seen elsewhere in the state. Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson reported Monday that more than 250,000 voters had cast ballots in the first two days of early voting alone, “a number that far exceeded the expectations of state and local election officials.”

The larger-than-expected voter turnout in Dickinson County has not resulted in any problems, technical or otherwise, in having enough ballots for demand, Bronzyk said.

Early voting runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. through Sunday. Anyone from Dickinson County can vote at the Kingsford City Hall site, 305 S. Carpenter Ave.

Even with the strong early voting, those holding off until election day Tuesday should be prepared to wait, Bronzyk said.

“I expect there is going to be a high turnout (Tuesday). There are going to be lines,” she said. “Hopefully, the more people that come early, the less the lines will be on election day.”
