Breitung updates rescue tools

QUINNESEC — Breitung Township will spend $7,060 on equipment needed by its rescue team.

Fire Department Chief Jim Rose said much of the equipment dates back to when the team first formed in about 2006 and is reaching the end of its useful life. Rose noted that in upcoming months regulators may adopt new standards from the National Fire Protection Association that would make replacement necessary as well.

Rose further told the township board Monday that while the equipment is not used for actual rescues that often, some of it has become worn from frequent training exercises.

The board Monday approved purchasing equipment that includes 12 harnesses, a lifeline and other miscellaneous equipment from MacQueen Equipment for $6,361; and a Sked Rescue System that is used for vertical and confined space rescues from Pioneer Rescue for $699.

In other business, the board:

— Unanimously voted against a request for a street light at the intersection of Collins Road and U.S. 2. Action had been tabled at previous meetings to give board members a chance to inspect the intersection themselves. The streetlight would have cost $3,700 to install and an $11 monthly increase in service fees. Trustee Ben Peterson noted the township has many other sites that could use a streetlight more than that intersection. Supervisor Denny Olson said a review of those sites is on order.

— Appointed Deborah Hanson as deputy clerk to replace Jamie Tinti, who resigned in October. For her additional duties as deputy clerk, Hanson will be paid a $300 per month stipend as her duties as deputy clerk are not eligible for unemployment compensation. As part of the appointment, Hanson will be added as a signatory on township bank accounts.

— Approved the fire department’s request to hire Jacob Manier as a probationary firefighter pending a successful background check. Manier will be stationed at fire hall No. 3. Rose said the fire department is nearly fully staffed, but he anticipates the number of applications to decrease during the winter months.

— A public hearing regarding the 2025 proposed budget will take place Dec. 9 during the board of trustees regular meeting. The hearing needed to be no later than Dec. 15.

— Members of the board thanked outgoing Trustee Michael Day for his service. Day was appointed to the board in December 2023 and will be replaced by Sharon Reuter.
