Body ID’d as missing kayaker

MUNISING — Michigan State Police have confirmed that a body found Nov. 8 at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was that of 65-year-old John Kueber, who was reported missing in September after he was believed to have gone kayaking on Lake Superior.

On Sept. 29, state police from the Negaunee Township post responded to a report that Kueber was last heard from on Sept. 22. State police along with Alger County Sheriff’s Office Marine Patrol and the National Park Service conducted an extensive search.

On Nov. 8, troopers were called to Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore after hikers spotted a deceased subject’s body had washed ashore. The body was not initially able to be identified.

Through DNA analysis, MSP has now identified the body. Foul play is not suspected, MSP said in a news release.

“This is not the outcome any of us were hoping for. We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew Mr. Kueber. We also thank all those who assisted in the search efforts.” said Lt. Ben Eckola.

Starting at $2.99/week.
