Arrest made in shooting incident in Athelstane
MARINETTE, Wis. — A male subject is in custody after a shooting incident late Sunday morning in the Town of Athelstane in Marinette County.
At about 10:51 a.m., Marinette County Dispatch received a call from a citizen reporting that a male subject had fired a handgun into the ground and toward their stopped vehicle, which had multiple passengers inside, on Smiley Road, according to a news release from Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller.
It was further reported the male subject had walked to a nearby residence and was now armed with a shotgun. Deputies, along with several members of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, immediately responded and set up a perimeter at the location.
The Marinette Special Response Team and BearCat, along with the Marinette County and Wisconsin DNR drone teams, were able to observe the male subject, who was still armed with the long gun, walking back and forth in the driveway near the incident location. Using the armored rescue vehicle, members of the SRT team were able to safely make contact with the male and take him into custody without further incident.
Assisting at the site were members from the Marinette Police Department, Wisconsin DNR, Silver Cliff Rescue and Aurora Medical Center-Bay Area Paramedics. The Brown County SWAT Team was also responding but were canceled after the person was taken into custody.
The incident remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office. Charges of first-degree recklessly endangering safety will be forwarded to the Marinette County District Attorney’s Office, Miller stated in the news release.
