Dickinson board comes out against taking illegal immigrants

Resolution passed to counter rumors about undocumented aliens

IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Board will object to any effort by the state or federal government to settle undocumented migrants in the county and will spend no county funds to house or provide services to such.

The board took that stand in a resolution adopted Monday, saying it was passed in response to rumors indicating otherwise. Commissioner Barbara Kramer said she’s heard statements the “county board would support anyone who walks through the doors.”

The action comes four months after the board was asked by some citizens to considering declaring Dickinson “a non-sanctuary county for illegal immigrants.”

Commissioner Joe Stevens said he has reached out to state and federal officials for better guidance on dealing with illegal immigration, but the response was limited.

“I just think the citizens need to know where we stand on this,” he said. “I want immigration, I just want it to be legal.”

The issue of the county’s role is mostly speculative, as there’s no evidence it’s been approached about helping to accommodate undocumented migrants.

Nor is the county’s resolution necessarily at odds with Michigan’s Newcomer Rental Subsidy program, which provides housing assistance to immigrants and refugees under income and work-based eligibility requirements. As reported by the Detroit Free Press, those who are in the U.S. illegally aren’t eligible for the program. Some lawmakers,

however, have questioned whether the state’s vetting for the assistance is adequate.

The Dickinson County resolution states the board has been approached by citizens about “a potential influx of undocumented migrants” into the county and “has extensively researched the questions and concerns regarding undocumented migrants raised by the citizens” of the county.

The resolution states the board “strongly objects” to any state or federal efforts “to settle undocumented migrants in Dickinson County.” It adds the board “will not appropriate, allocate or otherwise direct county financial resources or other taxpayer funds to support, house or provide services to undocumented migrants in Dickinson County.”
