Library summer reading program registration begins Monday
IRON MOUNTAIN — June programs at the Dickinson County Library include:
— iSPY Tank: June to August.
The tank features monthly adventures — including camping, ocean and outer space — that allow a child to play iSPY while visiting the library and earn a prize from the treasure chest. It is sponsored by Dr. Daniel and Christine McMahon.
— Summer reading starts Monday.
All ages are welcome to stop in at any library site to register and get a bag of fun freebies and a summer reading goal card to fill out and return by Saturday, July 20, for a chance to win a prize. Registration bags are sponsored by the Slajus family.
— North Dickinson School Story Stroll: Monday through Wednesday, June 26.
Take a walk and read an adventurous story for all ages. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.
— Ford Motor Company Plant: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Mondays, June 10, 17 and 24, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local historian Bill Cummings will present to teens and adults the history of the Ford Motor Company plant that was in Kingsford. Major topics will include Henry Ford’s beginnings in the automobile industry, Ford’s early connection with Dickinson County, building the Ford Motor Company plant, Model T parts production, station wagon production, WACO CG-4A glider production, post-war station wagon production, charcoal briquets production, and the closing of the plant. No registration is required.
— Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain Book Club: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Teens and adults are invited to discuss the U.P. Notable Book, “Firekeeper’s Daughter” by Angeline Boulley. New members are welcome to join the book club. No registration is required.
–The Dickinson County Library board will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain. The public is welcome to attend.
— Food Passport Challenge Kits: Available starting Wednesday at all library sites.
Teens and adults can pick up a packet that includes a blank passport, food recipes, local restaurants, and information with the library’s A to Z the USA and Global Road Warrior resources. Upon completing the challenge, the passport can be turned in for the chance to win a prize. Sponsored by Dr. Dale and Lucy Shampo.
— Passport to Adventure with Clear Lake Education Center: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Kids ages 5 to 12 can join the library and the Clear Lake Education Center for activities surrounding outdoor adventures, such as hiking safely, leave no trace, wildlife, tracking, water safety, and more. No registration is required. Sponsored by Jamieson & Fulks Orthodontics.
— Bow Wows and Books: 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Patrons of all ages and reading abilities can practice their reading skills by reading aloud to therapy dogs, Azul, a Siberian husky-mix and Diogee, a sheepadoodle. Registration is required; call the library at 906-774-1218 to sign up for a 15-minute time slot with either or both dogs.
— Book Breakdowns with Ashtyn Parent: 10 to 11 a.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local author Parent will read and talk about her book, “Protectors of the Skies” with kids in kindergarten through fourth grade. This book talks about the constellations and how and why explorers used them to guide their adventures. Books will be available for purchase and signing. After the reading, attendees can create galaxy jars to take home. No registration is required.
— The Art of Being: 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, June 15, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This drop-in program is designed for patrons in grade five and up that are currently battling cancer, are survivors of cancer, and for those that are/have been caregivers (includes family, friends, medical personnel, etc.). Each month a craft kit will be available for attendees to do if they wish; June will be a Sharpie Shoe Craft. No registration is required. Sponsored by Brian Brouillette, P.C. Attorney at Law.
— Adventures in Storytime: 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Explore the wonders of early literacy through books, songs, and activities at this program for kids up to age five and their caregivers. Learn about bears with books “Explorers of the Wild” by Cale Atkinson and “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” by Micheal Rosen. Bring a teddy bear friend. No registration is required. — Yoga at the Library: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
Local yoga instructor Kimberly Spigarelli will lead teen and adult patrons through beginning to moderate poses and breathing exercises. Participants should bring a mat or towel. Required registration opens this Tuesday; call the library at 906-774-1218 to sign up.
— Book Breakdowns with Susie Finkbeiner: 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, at the Dickinson County Library in Iron Mountain.
This Christian Book Association bestselling author as well as double Michigan Notable book winner will share the inspiration and background for her novel, “All Manner of Things,” to teens and adults. There will also be a session for questions, book signing and refreshments. Attendees will be entered into a prize drawing to win an autographed book. No registration is required. — Messy Bubble Adventures: 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 19, at the Solomonson-Norway Branch; and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday, June 20, at the North Dickinson Branch in Felch Township.
