Hamilton ‘no wake’ request gains no support
IRON MOUNTAIN — Dickinson County Board will set aside a property owner’s request for a “no wake” policy on Hamilton Lake southeast of Loretto after hearing objections from others living along the lake.
Craig Maxwell approached the county after Waucedah Township shelved his petition to enact an ordinance.
“I believe the county’s duty to protect its residents requires your action,” he said in an email, claiming speed boats and personal watercraft are creating serious safety concerns.
But several lake residents who addressed commissioners Monday said Maxwell is in the minority. “I don’t see any of the things going on that he’s saying,” Mark Marchetti said.
Mike Bronzyk said Maxwell hasn’t made an effort to seek a consensus among the 204 property owners on the lake. Waucedah Township’s decision, he said, came after other property owners protested the request.
Dozens of lake residents attended Monday’s county board meeting, apparently to show opposition to a no-wake ordinance. No one spoke in support.
According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, a resident can petition to a local unit of government asking for an ordinance to be submitted to the DNR, which then conducts an investigation and offers a recommendation.
Commissioner John Degenaer Jr. said he would want support from more than 75% of the riparian owners before taking up an ordinance, while Commissioner Barbara Kramer noted the county has no property on Hamilton Lake.
The board unanimously approved Degenaer’s motion to take no action on Maxwell’s request. Commissioner Joe Stevens was absent.
In other action, the board:
— Agreed to postpone a June 5 decision to pay $26,300 for production of a video to be shown on YouTube and at the International City/County Management Association’s annual conference in September in Pittsburgh. The five-minute video was to be prepared and edited by Washington D.C.-based WebsEdge, with county access to about two hours of other footage after a 10-hour visit. Seth Anderson of Norway, co-founder of Mountain Media House in Iron Mountain, told the board Monday he was disappointed no advertised bidding was done for such a production.
The vote to postpone was unanimous, with no discussion. At the June 5 meeting, the vote to proceed with the ICMAtv video was 3-1, with Commissioner Ann Martin dissenting and Chairman Henry Wender absent.
— Heard Controller Brian Bousley report a pre-bid meeting has been set for June 24 at Ford Airport on proposals for a steel-framed storage building measuring 100 by 60 feet. At its June 5 meeting, the board had approved transferring passenger facility charge funds totaling $256,470 to the airport’s capital project fund to cover the cost of several improvements.
— Approved $1,500 to the Sawyer Lake Association for Eurasian watermilfoil control.
— Learned the cost for renewal of a courthouse postage meter lease/service agreement with Pitney Bowes will be $383.69 monthly for a five-year term.
