Crash kills two in Marinette County
TOWN OF GROVER, Wis. — Authorities say inattentive driving is thought to have been a factor in a two-vehicle crash that killed two Coleman, Wis., women Sunday afternoon west of Peshtigo, Wis.
The crash was reported about 1:06 p.m. on County Highway B at County Highway W in the Town of Grover, Marinette County Sheriff Randy Miller said in a news release.
An investigation indicates that a vehicle operated by 46-year-old Scott Mathis of Pembine, Wis., was southbound on County Highway W when he failed to stop for the stop sign at Highway B.
His vehicle collided with one traveling east driven by Elysia Kust, 44. Both she and a passenger, 73-year-old Mary Kust, were fatally injured in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation by the Marinette County Sheriff’s Office, Marinette County District Attorney’s Office and the Marinette County Medical Examiner’s Office. Also assisting Marinette County deputies were members of the Wisconsin State Patrol, Grover Porterfield Fire Department, Peshtigo Police Department, Bay Area Rescue and the Marinette County Highway Department.
This is the first fatal crash and the first and second fatalities related to a motor vehicle crash in Marinette County in 2024, Miller said.
