Solberg’s plans to reopen in Felch
FELCH TOWNSHIP — Solberg’s Bar & Grill plans to reopen today, roughly two days after a fire left two neighboring houses in ruins and the owner of the business and a companion with serious burns.
A post on Solberg’s Bar & Grill’s Facebook page stated the business remained closed Thursday but looked to be back open today. The landmark in the heart of Felch is particularly known for its Friday fish fry.
A fire tore through the house next to the dining room portion of the business late Tuesday. Owner Robert Smith and Nikki Versailles Phinney were able to make it out before firefighters reached the site on Calumet Mine Road just after 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Both were taken to Marshfield Medical Center-Dickinson in Iron Mountain, then later flown to a regional burn center in Milwaukee, according to reports.
The fire spread to another house at N7531 Calumet Mine Road, leaving both a total loss, officials said.
But Solberg’s Bar & Grill had minimal damage, melting a plastic business sign and singeing some siding and roofing. The bar area itself — which dates back to 1905 — was not affected except for some smoke.
About 50 firefighters from seven area departments — Felch, West Branch Township, Breen Township, Sagola Township, Norway, Breitung Township and Ford River Township — as well as Michigan Department of Natural Resources fire staff worked until early morning Wednesday to bring the blaze under control, Felch Township Fire Chief Brian Anderson said.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation.
