Kingsford adjusts rules on fireworks

KINGSFORD — An updated ordinance allows fireworks on all federal holidays in the city of Kingsford, but with more restrictive hours, taking effect the second week of September.

New sections prohibit the discharge of consumer fireworks within the city limits of the city of Kingsford except on the following days after 11 a.m.:

— Dec. 31, until 1 a.m. on Jan. 1

— The Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Memorial Day until 11:45 p.m. each of those days.

— June 29 to July 4 until 11:45 p.m. on each of those days; July 5 if that date is a Friday or Saturday, until 11:45 p.m.; and Saturday and Sunday immediately preceding Labor Day until 11:45 p.m. on both those days.

Added to those dates will be Martin Luther King Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Labor Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.

Kingsford City Council on Aug. 21 approved the update, which repeals sections 24-150 and 24-151, which were adopted June 15, 2015.

The previous ordinance allowed fireworks to be fired off until 1 a.m. Because the Fourth of July holiday was during the week this year, the city had more complaints than in previous years.

There is a civil fine of $1,000 for each violation, with $500 of the fine collected to be remitted to the local law enforcement agency responsible for enforcing the ordinance.

In other business, the council:

— Approved a purchase agreement by Josh McCole LLC to purchase lots 112 and 124 in Evergreen Court at a price of $9,000 per parcel. McCole has already started construction on a duplex on a previously purchased site in Evergreen Court.

— Heard a timeline on the proposed election to repeal the civil service commission for the Nov. 7 fall election. Advertisements will run on Oct. 28 and 31.

— Learned the four candidates for the public safety department have completed their training at the police academy in Marquette and are in service at the department. Director Brandon Rutter also reported in a memo that the city had received $61,650 in grant money from the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Public Safety Academy Assistance Program. This will help cover the cost of the academy, room and board, uniforms, ammunition and wages for three recruits the city sponsored.

— Approved training for City Treasurer Holly Palmer to attend the Michigan Municipal Treasurers Association fall conference, which will be held virtually. Cost will be $399.

— Received a letter from the Breitung Township School informing the city of their proposed bond election on Nov. 7. The school district is seeking to borrow a sum of not to exceed $34.5 million over 25 years.
