MANISTIQUE — The former owner of the Savage Mane Salon and Day Spa in Iron Mountain has taken on a new challenge — a bed and breakfast in Manistique.
The Blue Mystique Inn recently received its First Dollar Presentation from Schoolcraft Tourism & Commerce to celebrate the Inn’s successful inaugural summer season.
More than just a place to stay, The Blue Mystique Inn offers guests a full experience of relaxation, luxury and fine dining, owner Elizabeth Douglas said.
“I feel that Airbnb and Vrbo serve their purpose, but I feel that people want to go to a place where they do not have to haul their food, it is prepared for you,” Douglas said. “People like nice things, like nice linens and china, that is what they have come to expect and that is how we treat our guests.”
Douglas purchased The Blue Mystique Inn, formerly the Royal Rose Bed and Breakfast, in February 2024 and reopened it later that month after a few weeks of painting and decorating. Each of the inn’s five bedrooms is decorated in its own theme and has its own bathroom, an amenity often lacking at bed and breakfasts.

She is the 18th owner of the colonial-style house that was built in 1905. Along with being a boarding house and inn, it also at times was a private residence.
Douglas said the location and the classic historical look of the house made it hard to pass up.
“We are overlooking the harbor and the marina and we are a half a block from downtown,” Douglas said. “It is a nice little community, it has got a great downtown, great shops, great shop owners.”
They are able to go to the marina or the local airport and pick guests arriving by boat or private plane, she added, plus Manistique is centrally located to many Upper Peninsula attractions.
The Blue Mystique Inn offers a unique chef’s table experience, featuring exclusive dinners crafted by Chef Joshua Curtis and his wife, Lore. Douglas always envisioned having a chef at the inn and Curtis was delighted to fill that role.
They started small, offering just a couple of meals here and there, but demand quickly grew. Now the chef’s table has become an attraction at the inn, available for private parties, special occasions and inn guests.
The dining event offers a five- to seven-course meal tailored to guest’s dietary preferences and restrictions. Guests must book in advance to discuss any dietary needs, allowing Curtis to create a personalized menu for each occasion.
During the meal, the chef serves and discusses each course to enhance the culinary experience.
And, of course, there is breakfast. With each night’s stay, guests can enjoy a full sit-down breakfast, freshly prepared and served on fine dinnerware.
For Douglas, the people she gets to encounter at the inn are the highlight of owning the business.
“We are having a great time and meeting a ton of really nice people,” Douglas said. “Whenever people leave, everybody hugs goodbye. It is a really nice experience.”
